There is a call for entries happening right now by a group called Hit That Shutter which is a collective of photo faculty and artists trying to communicate ideas about photography education. Below is a message to be forwarded to the likes of all you…

To Undergraduate Photography Programs:

We are “Hit That Shutter,” a group of photographic faculty and photographic artists. We seek to create an exchange between differing photographic programs and their students, to foster a dialogue of understanding of the differing approaches and methods of instruction found at institutions throughout the United States and to actively support emerging artists by showcasing their work.

We are inviting you to spread the word about our current call for entries:

Spring 2011 Undergraduate Photography Survey

The top selected student photographer will receive a cash prize of $500.00 in addition to being included in the annual publication (book) as well as being included in the Best of Show Exhibition.
The top three selected student photographers will be included in the annual publication (book) and will receive a copy of the book. They will also be included in the Best of Show Exhibition.
The top ten selected student photographers will be included in the annual publication (book) and receive a copy of the book.
Featured artists (instructors) will also be included in the annual publication (book) and receive a copy of the book. Please visit our website at HitThatShutter.org <http://HitThatShutter.org> for details about submitting work as a featured artist.
The instructor listed on the entry form will also receive a cash prize of $500.00.

The intent of the cash awards is to encourage/provide photographers of all levels some funding to use for the creation of their art. Students in any undergraduate program with a concentration in photography can submit any photographically derived work. We are asking all undergraduate photography students to participate and we hope that you will pass this information on to everyone that may be interested in participating.

LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph

I have stumbled across a pretty incredible 3 day festival coming up in a few months. The LOOK3 festival this year will be three days of exhibitions, workshops, lectures and mastertalks from some photographers you may have heard of (Alex Webb, Steve McCurry, Nan Goldin, Mary Ellen Mark, etc.) and has separate workshop classes which, although are a bit more expensive, are with some pretty prominent people, like Brian Storm of MediaStorm (if you haven’t checked out MediaStorm, i would highly recommend it). The Festival will be taking place in Charlottesville, North Carolina, June 9-11 with some workshops being prior to the start of the festival. Best part, three day passes for students are only $60 if you buy online before March 15. Take advantage of this, it should be a pretty awesome opportunity. Boys and Girls club Volunteers

Hello all, and sorry for the long time, no post. As some of you may remember, Jimmie Allen had requested at one of the meetings that The Boys and Girls Club needed volunteers on Friday afternoons to teach kids a little bit about photography. Well today just so happens to be Friday and that means that you could be helping teach some local kids a thing or two about photography. This is a great volunteer opportunity and could be a really good time. If you are interested in participating tonight, the group will be meeting at The Gillioz Theater downtown at 4:30 and will meet for an hour. If you are interested in participating at a later date and want more information you can talk to Jimmie and he would have all the specifics for you.

Visiting Artist Mark Steinmetz

Hey everyone, Don’t forget that Mark Steinmetz will be visiting tomorrow November 9th at 8 p.m. in Karls Hall 101. He will be giving a lecture, I presume covering his past work and process of working. He will also be doing student critiques tomorrow in two sessions, from 9-noon and 1:30-4:30 in Ellis 303 so bring your work, past or present, and get another viewpoint on your work.

Dominant Color Contest – Deadline September 29

The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards is accepting submissions for a few different contests at the moment, however, the deadline is approaching rather quickly, so enter soon.

The first of these contests is one focused on photographs that have a single dominant color that becomes the centerpiece of the image. It can be any color, even black or white, but the image as a whole must be in color. So strictly black and white images, are not eligible to be entered in this competition. There are a few examples on the WEBSITE that explain perhaps a bit better than I.

The second contest they are currently accepting submissions for is a Urban and Country Landscape competition in which they are looking for photographs that tell of a place, your hometown, your city, a city you visited, etc. It seems to be a pretty open subject matter as long as the image is telling of the place where it was captured. What is especially nice about this competition is that you are only required to an entry fee if you are accepted through the first screening process, so there really is no risk. Check it out. Submissions are being accepted until October 3rd so you don’t have much time.

A New Year

Greetings all of you fellow photo folk. I sincerely hope that everyone’s semester is going well for them so far. Since this is the first post of the 2010-2011 school year and so much is going on as far as events, shows, competitions, etc… there will be a few post following this one with details to every opportunity that I can dig up for you all.

I wanted to remind/inform everyone, and encourage you to spread the word along about something coming up very soon that should be of interest to anyone that doesn’t own every piece of equipment their little heart desires. MAC On Campus will be here, in the studio in Pummill Hall on September 30 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. MAC On Campus is a company that specializes in getting top quality camera equipment into the hands of students and offers some pretty nice discounts for us. They have everything from camera bodies and digital backs, strobes and lighting kits, wireless strobe triggers, light meters, tripods, etc. Even if you don’t think you can afford anything or arent really planning on buying anything you should be sure to come check out what they have and get to handle some top-end gear.

Later that evening, in Pummill 205 at 8:15 p.m., a former MSU Photo student and MFA graduate from the University of Chicago, Casey Smallwood will be on campus and will be giving a talk about grad school, how to prepare yourself and get your application in. This is an awesome opportunity for anyone who has considered grad school even in the slightest. Please plan to attend and pick the brain of someone who has gone through all of it recently and show your support for her willingness to visit and talk with us. Be sure to check out her website and look at her work.

International Photography Awards deadline May 31

A contest opportunity with several categories for professional and non-professional photographers with some pretty substantial cash prizes up for grabs. There is a discounted student submission fee of $30 for a series of up to 5 images, which isn’t too bad a deal considering the first place prize is $10,000 cash. http://www.photoawards.com/en/

There are a few contest and exhibition opportunities I just found out about through Calumet’s ESP (Educational Support Program) I would like to have a little plug for that, if you are not already a member of ESP or on the mailing list, I would strongly suggest that you do that in the nearest future. They offer huge discounts on equipment and supplies to registered students on just about everything, sometimes hundreds and thousands of dollars in discounts.

Anyway, they are currently accepting submissions for the 2010 New York Photo Festival, which is a HUGE opportunity for all you graduating seniors and recent grads. The festival will take place in mid-May for a few days and accepted submissions will be played in a video with entries from all over the world during the festival. All of the info for submissions can be found here, as well as links to a ton of really cool stuff, Check it out!

The Next opportunity I have for you today is a contest called “The Meaning of Light” and is being put on by the Photoworkshop.com online magazine. The deadline for submission is June 15th so there is plenty of time to get your work in and is open to ALL photographers 18 years and older. The stipulations are limited as they just require that for this particular contest, all images must have used some form of artificial light and indoors, so if you are a studio person, or you work at night, or use a flash…you get the point. They are offering awesome prizes including an Elinchrome lighting system, light modifying stuff, Gitzo tripods and opportunity for the cover of Double Exposure Magazine. It is, however, a bit expensive to enter, but a great opportunity. INFO

Another HUGE opportunity that is open to all photographers is the SHOTS Magazine summer issue. SHOTS is a pretty legitimate photo magazine which has published a lot of big names and is seen worldwide, which may sound intimidating, but there is just a $15 submission fee for up to 12 images and there is no theme that you have to fit into, so there really is no reason to not enter really. I cannot express how great of an opportunity this is…(a little help Jimmie? Gwen?) Check out the full info here.

Photographer’s Forum early deadline today!

Hey everyone, I apologize for my slacking on giving updates on deadlines and opportunities lately.

However, the early registration deadline for the 30th Spring student contest with Photographer’s Forum magazine is today. The submission fee is 3.95 per image up to today, and after today it goes up to 4.95 per image. The are accepting submissions at the regular submission fee of 4.95 until May 17th, so you still have plenty of time to enter. This is a great opportunity for everyone to submit work and they are giving away great prizes for the finalists and winners, they are even giving a few free issues to people just for submitting. http://www.pfmagazine.com/E/Contest.aspx

Emerging Visions Exhibition Deadline April 3

The APG Gallery in Atalanta is accepting submissions for their upcoming exhibition Emerging Visions. Thematically it is open to all works, but they comment that thier focus and aim is to receive work that is pushing the boundaries of fine art photography. This is something that really everyone should be entering as there is no submission fee at all.
